ARTISTS and PRICELISTS

HILARY WILLIAMS

zscreenprinting.jpgHILLARY WILLIAMS is an artist living in San Francisco. She works in a number of mediums creating screen prints, paintings, drawings, and fabric sculptures. Through layering and collage, she makes dense pieces that deal with the absurdity and poignancy of our world by laughing, crying, or standing back in awe. In many pieces she merges architecture and urban themes them with rural landscapes.  In creating her screen prints she takes most of her own photographs, and each stencil is created by hand, with layers stenciled and then printed on each piece. Her paintings are composed of recycled stretched fabrics on boards. She then layers acrylic with screen printing and other mixed media. Hilary received her BA in Printmaking from California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland 2002.

My work employs a personal lexicon of symbolism pulled from family history, rock and roll memorabilia, catholic iconography, and underground comic books to explore issues of cultural and ethnic identity. The themes of myth and memory fascinate me. I prefer to use traditional materials such as oils, ink, wax, and graphite in contrast to the unconventional subject matter I enjoy.

JEFF PAUL RILEY

paintings_2008_june_july_006riley.jpgJEFF PAUL RILEY received his BA in Fine Arts in 1995 from UCSB.  Jeff has been working on various bodies of paintings since he moved to San Francisco in 1999. His paintings use botanical (natural) and  computer graphics / design elements (cyber) references as a starting point for his abstract oil paintings. He is influenced by nature and other artists who use systems of ordering and arranging ideas and thoughts, such  as  Joan Snyder, Judy Pfaff, and Albert Ohlen. Jeff likes art that seems to be part puzzle and sort of an absurdist answer at the same time. He likes to play w/ scale and shifting systems of painting processes.

He studied at Mesa State College where he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1998. Carlos frequently works with kids and finds children's art to be an inspiration as well as an influence upon his own work. Finn says, “a few shapes, a line, some scribbles: and the composition of a child's drawing is complete.” Carlos Michael Finn's work illustrates pure abstraction and extraordinary representations of the human and animal form. “Abstract first, eventually you will find reality.
"A painting begins not with an idea or subject matter, but rather a relationship with the first line, the first shape, the first mark.” A few shapes a line and some scribbles and the composition of a child's drawing are complete."
"I want to draw like a child with simple lines and abstract forms that eventually shapes my reality."

EVE SHEN

  BIOpic.jpg
Born in Taiwan and moved to the United States when she was twelve, Eve Shen is a local San Francisco artist with deep roots in the city. Eve spent her adolescent and college years between New York and New Jersey where she received her BFA in Graphic Design from the Fashion Institute of Technology. Working every weekend nonstop in her family’s Chinese restaurant, packing take out orders and waiting tables, Eve wanted to get away to explore her passions: art, traveling, yoga, and food (sushi is her favorite!). She moved to San Francisco in 1998 and hasn’t looked back, although she’ll never forget where she came from. Inspired by life, nature, and the limitless imaginations of youth, Eve is always discovering new ways to create art and give back to her community. Her art has been described as colorful, happy, and filled with energy. She hates writing bios and would rather talk to you in person, so check out her work at

Abstraction is not just nature and architecture, organic and inorganic.  It is about identity.  It’s about who you are and how your ideas evolve.  Abstraction is being brave and stepping up to the idea of the unknown.  Painting abstractly is the process of exploring the substance of each individual painting and its own identity.  It is a dialogue that allows the ideas to come from the work.  This begins when you abandon any and all of the assumptions and preconceived notions one might have about abstract painting. It is a process of pushing and pulling, taking the idea and the work too far, making the mistake, turning the relevant into the irrelevant and then back againIn my mind, true abstraction is a challenge to all our perceptions and it is how I experience the world.  Regardless of this, I choose to paint toward those unknown ideas that reflect my experiences, while ignoring the obvious.  From Mondrians idea of painting to “ ask big baffling questions” to David Smiths abandonment of the subject, abstraction is relevant to all of us who believe in it. With this in mind (for me) the only option then is to personally embody the idea of true abstraction as an abstract painter instead of just painting abstractly.

CAMERON CHERNOFF

cam_with_hat.jpg

CAMERON CHERNOFF  I create art because it allows me to communicate with something that is greater then myself. I seek awareness and understanding of the underlying nature of the world through the creative process. For me, making Art is like catching a wave when I surf. Once the energy builds up, I harness that energy and ride it out in the medium I choose. Through my art I wish to connect viewers to the mysteries and wonders of creation and create a portal to the divine nature of the imagination. My artistic influences range from art of indigenous cultures such as Native American tribal art or Tibetan tangka paintings to Picasso and Dubuffet. These artists admired and were inspired by the depth and beauty of so -called "primitive art." I also feel deeply connected to the modern day visionary movement led by Alex Grey and Luke Brown. I appreciate all artwork that is visually stimulating and alive as well as communicating the spirituality of humanity.

CECILIA WELDEN

 cece.jpg

CECILIA WELDEN   I was born in the California Bay Area and have been an artist for most of my life.  For me, Art is like keeping a diary. I received my BA in Fine Arts from San Francisco State University.  I work in the Fine Art service industry where I paint and gild picture frames.  Influenced from my work as a skilled craftsperson I sometimes incorporate industrial materials, esthetics, or processes in my art. I have been doing wax encaustic paintings since 2004.  From the first time I studied an encaustic painting I was fascinated with the texture and felt compelled to know more about the process.  I began taking encaustic workshops through Heather Patterson at The Fort Mason Center.  I am now a member of the International Encaustic Artists group, and have attended The Montserrat College of Art  Wax Encaustic Conference in Beverly Massachusetts. I am an annual participant in San Francisco Open Studios, a member of Art Span and have participated in numerous group shows and juried exhibitions

A Word on Wax                          Wax paintings can be incredibly luscious (the medium even smells like honey). The paintings can also be quite durable, there are examples of encaustic portraits on mummies dating back two thousand years. Encaustic is usually an opaque mixture made with melted beeswax, damar (for strength) and pigment; However I use  thin veils of paint, shellac, dyes and dry pigment between the layers clear encaustic. I am drawn to the translucent properties of the wax.  The wax has a melting point of 180° F and can be damaged if left in a hot car (or a burning house). It can also crack in sub zero temperatures.

Liz Maher, Keep Elizabeth Beautiful,
2008, watercolor, ink    $200.00

I attended Rhode Island School of Design for Drawing, Painting, Performance, Sculpture.

I am...unable to walk quietly without causing messes and footprints

Interests :riding my bike, picking up garbage, baking and cooking and dehydrating food, dancing, sewing, making costumes

I am interested in how perception of self influences the emotional relationship with surrounding environment,. The work is built upon the thin membrane we create as a boundary between our constructed interior reality and the outside plane where we meet with others, and examines the ever-shifting relationships between nature and will, impulse and altruism, the toil toward ascension and simply existing with oneself.

Find Liz Maher's paintings and drawings in the Hall    RANGE: $100-$200 as marked

TRY SERINO

 try-1.JPG

TRY SERINO  My work is neither figurative nor abstract; I see it as a mixture ofmetaphor and experience. The statements personified in my work ultimately emerge from present conditions unique to me. I work with avariety of materials, including gesso, acrylic medium/paint, charcoal, and  photographs, put on to canvas, after making notes/sketches . I continue the process of realizing my initial idea-my subjective response-by adding layers of pigment,to build up the image.Although primarily representational, conceptual relationships betweencolor and value influence my work. I attempt to illustrate the beauty hidden in each individual portrait. Earned a BA in studio Art from The University of the District of Columbia(03) exhibiting solo shows inWashington DC, Savannah Georgia, and Salem Massachusetts. Francisco(08) and currently a stylist at the Barber Lounge Salon .
